 Summer School 2009

We are pleased to announce the CCMT 2009 Summer School Programme.  Applications are now being accepted for this exciting two week intensive musical theatre workshop.  Following several years of outstanding workshops we have taken tutor, student and parent feedback and created a comprehensive and professional experience.  This format provides you with a great opportunity to learn new skills and improve your technique in acting, singing and dancing.  In addition, you will have the chance to showcase your new skills in 2 public performances.

Curriculum

The workshop will be divided into two weeks.  During week one you will attend intensive daily workshops taught by our team of professional tutors.  Each day will include classes in each of the musical theatre disciplines as well as special presentations by guest tutors and master classes.  Material for these workshops will be drawn from a variety of sources and will not necessarily be related to the performance planned for the end of the school.  After a one day break, you will spend the second week working with our tutors to prepare a performance that will showcase your talents.

Auditions

The CCMT programme is designed for students (ages 10 to 21) who have already begun to develop their skills in drama, dance or voice.  Our goal is to provide the highest quality tuition for students aiming to further their training and skills in the art of musical theatre. Our audition process is designed to ensure that this workshop will most effectively meet the needs of each individual student. By placing students into groups with others of a similar skill level, each will have the greatest opportunity for individual growth.

Auditions will be held at ACG Senior College on the 18th October and 22nd November. We will contact you to schedule an audition time. If you are not accepted into the CCMT programme for any reason you will receive a complete refund of any fees paid.

Audition Guidelines for the CCMT Summer School from Russell Pickering – Education Director

What to prepare:

Prepare one musical theatre song that best demonstrates your strengths as a young musical theatre actor. There will be an accompanist provided at the audition. You are strongly encouraged to use them.

Things to keep in mind when choosing a song:

•    Make sure the song is in your range.

•    Make sure sheet music is readily available

•    Make sure the song tells a story and sounds good outside of its original context.

•    Make sure the song is an appropriate choice for your age and ability.

•    Remember you are auditioning for a ‘musical theatre’ school so if possible you should choose something from that genre rather than something you heard on the radio.

•    In the audition we do not encourage the use of backing tracks, or for performers to accompany themselves.

General notes to keep in mind when auditioning:

•    Make sure you get to your audition at least 20 minutes early – so you have plenty of time to sign-in, focus and calm yourself before you begin.

•    Prepare, prepare, prepare. It doesn’t look good when you come in and have to check your lines or hold the music. You should be completely off book and know the song back to front.

•    Do not give the accompanist loose sheets of music. It should either be in a clear filo-fax book or taped together in an ‘accordion’ style so the accompanist can easily turn the pages while playing. Remember they want to do the best job by you.

•    Remember the audition begins the moment you enter the premises – not just when you step into the audition room. Make sure you treat the staff and your fellow colleagues with respect at all times.

•    Remember when performing a song in an audition, the world of your character begins before the first beat of your music and ends after last. Be alive and ‘in the moment’ for the whole of the song, not just when you are singing.

•    When you enter the audition room calmly take your place in front of the auditioners. Stay focussed and present. Politely and pleasantly introduce yourself and say what you will be performing. Eg. “Hello, my name is Joe Blogs and I will be singing One Song Glory from Rent”. Pass the music to the accompanist and allow time for him/her to get sorted. When you are ready to start give a clear direction to the accompanist to start playing.

•    Remember; do not stand to close to the auditioners. They want to see how you can fill a space. There will quite likely be a mark on the floor where they want you to stand.

•    When performing, do not look directly at the auditioners – unless of course they ask you too. Focus your attention just above them, or just to the side.

•    The auditioners will most likely stop you when they’ve seen enough. Don’t take this personally. They may also ask you for extra material or to do some sort of movement or dance. You should be prepared for this also.

•    Dress appropriately for the audition. Make sure you have sensible shoes, your clothes are not restrictive to good movement, your hair is not hanging in your face and you’re not wearing any heavy jewellery.

•    Be aware you may be asked to sing the song again with adjustments. Remember the sign of a true professional is the ability to take a note from a director and make it fly.

•    Be professional, but don’t forget to enjoy yourself and have fun.
