Dean Carey is the Co-Founder and Creative Director of Actors Centre Australia, established in 1987. He is the author of the much acclaimed THE ACTORS AUDITION MANUAL (published in 1985) and MASTERCLASS (published in 1995), both sold throughout Australia, New Zealand and also overseas. He was Head of Acting at WAAPA (1990-93) and was Associate Head of Acting at NIDA (1989), where he also taught for a number of years. Dean has also taught and/or directed for VCA, QUT and the AFTRS, NIMROD Theatre Company,The Sydney Theatre Company & the NSW Conservatorium Opera School. He began his professional career in Melbourne in 1977 and for almost 30 years now has taught acting and performance skills across Australia and New Zealand. He has also taught in London at both the U.K Actors Centre, Mountview Drama School, and in Moscow, Brazil, Singapore and France. He also conducted workshops in New York at Yale University, as well as at various Colleges and Universities in Los Angeles and across California including Cal Arts, U.S.C., U.C.S.D., Ensemble Theatre Company, Florida, and the Los Angeles High School of Performing Arts. He was also International Guest Professor at the University of California in Davis for 3 months in 2003. 


He has been Performance Consultant on a number of feature films as well as musicals including The Boy from Oz and Saturday Night Fever. His directing credits include The Golden Age, Cosi, Children of the Sun, Flora the Red Menace, Tales from Vienna Woods, Late Arrivals, Sunrise, A Month In the Country, Dark of the Moon, The Rover, Peer Gynt, The Kid, The Touch of Silk and Bride of Gospel Place. He has directed versions of Two Gentlemen of Verona, Hamlet, Macbeth, and a number of showcases and student scenework presentations.


Dean is committed to the ongoing development of both actors and acting training and to the Australian artistic profession.  Dean continues to work as a performance consultant for various film and television projects, runs guest workshops and seminars throughout Australia and overseas, and is invited to speak about his career, life and philosophies at various functions and events across Sydney
