John Callen - Acting Tutor
John has worked more than 40 years as a professional actor, director and writer in theatre, radio, film and television and is well known as Oin in THE HOBBIT trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson. He has appeared in more than two dozen TV series and a number of films including THE SINKING OF THE RAINBOW WARRIOR, TREASURE ISLAND KIDS and THE MAN WHO LOST HIS HEAD.
John has voiced 150 documentaries and a number of audio books as well as radio drama and many commercials. Major screen directing credits include SHORTLAND STREET, EPITAPH, JACKSON’S WHARF, THE TRIBE, TAONGA and THE KIWI WHO SAVED BRITAIN. He has also performed in or directed more than 100 stage productions including WEST SIDE STORY, HAPPY END, OLIVER, THE BOYFRIEND, CHICAGO, GUYS AND DOLLS and other musicals. He recently performed live in Berlin to 10,000 people as host, singing and narrating a concert of “Middle Earth” music.
John has also worked as a lecturer at Toi Whakaari, Unitec’s School of Performing and Screen Arts and the University of Auckland. John is an originating board member and sometime tutor at The Actors’ Program, New Zealand’s leading drama school.
